There are a lot of options available now when it comes to budget 4K TVs, especially after all the hype following Xiaomi’s Mi TV 4A launch. Amidst the crowd, Indian consumer electronics company ADSUN recently launched its new 4K Smart TV, which offers a number of interesting features. It’s a true 4K UHD panel, capable of performing at 50 to 60Hz — unlike many other players that can only do 4K at 20-30Hz — and was recognised as such by all the external media players that we used during our review period. This TV does have the advantage of being priced at Rs. 29,999 , which is really aggressive for a 55-inch 4K panel.
The 5500S doesn’t have the slimmest profile or the most narrow bezels, but it manages to appear just trim and stylish enough to avoid the typical “plain black plastic” look many mid-range TVs fall victim to. The screen is framed with flat gunmetal gray plastic bezels that give the appearance of brushed aluminum. A tiny metallic rectangle in the middle of the bottom bezel holds the ADSUN logo in front and a tiny power button in the center, and provides the only bit of flair the front of the TV gets to interrupt the flat bezel. It’s a minimalist look that’s just a touch unique without making the TV’s design stand out more than the screen.
Connectivity options include 2 USB and 2 HDMI ports, of which one supports ARC (Audio Return Channel). For audio output the TV has a 3.5mm jack line-out port that’s confusingly marked as AV out, and a coaxial out for digital audio and surround sound. Other connectivity options include two sets of composite inputs, an RF connector for a standard TV antenna, and an Ethernet port. There’s no Bluetooth, which is why a bundled USB dongle for the keyboard remote is needed.
The ADSUN TV AD-5500S boasts a 10-bit panel with support for 4K UHD (3840 x 2160 pixels). Visuals are quite good especially when you consider the price tag. Needless to say, in comparison to higher-end 4K TVs from the likes of Sony or Samsung, pictures on the ADSUN TV look a tad washed out. ADSUN has used an LED-edgelit LCD panel with a 6.5ms response time and peak brightness of 400 nits. The company claims that this panel has a viewing angle of 178 degrees. There were no noticeable light leaks on the panel, which is always a good sign for a budget TV.
The 5500S is powered by a Mali CPU with Quad Cores and runs on Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) . There’s 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, out of which you get a little more than 4GB to use for apps. You can use an USB device as additional storage for videos, pictures, music and installing apps. The TV supports Miracast, so you can stream content directly from your PC or any compatible device. There are many entertainment apps are pre installed but you can install new apps with use of Aptoide Store that comes with tv.
By not having to worry about the thickness of the 5500S, ADSUN was able to pack in two 12W speakers. The result is that the audio is quite loud, and more than enough for most living room sizes in our country. But just being loud isn’t enough, and the overall audio experience does leave a lot to be desired. The speakers just about feel adequate when watching daily soaps or news channels.
Excellent value for money
Good picture quality
Contrast ratio could be better
At Rs 29,999, the ADSUN TV 55 inch is a great package if user experience and picture quality are your primary preferences. You will not get better 4K HDR performance on any other TV at this price in India. The ADSUN TV AD-5500S has a good panel, better than some of the other 4K budget TVs. However, if you’re looking for a low-cost screen for a PS4 Pro, or any other external device that supports 4K output, then this device has a lot to offer.
Yes, the TV has a few shortcomings but the smart TV category, in general, is still fairly new and no TV is perfect yet. After weighing all its pros and cons, I can safely say that this is arguably the best smart TV one can buy under Rs 30,000 in India currently.
